Portishead Dock, 1989

Now that I’m finally back to base, I can truly start this game and what a start the last 24-or-so hours have been. I didn’t expect to rack up 40 species. Maybe in a week: my old stamping ground, Walkwood, couldn’t muster more than 40 in an entire month although it didn’t have the varied habitat found around here.

Highlights have been meadow pipits right in the middle of the new housing estate, gadwall, green woodpecker, the first linnets of the year and, jewel in the crown, a kingfisher speeding away up a rhyne (pronounced reen, apparently). That was a first for Somerset.

Reverting to Eeyore-type, I’d think that was it for the month but I haven’t even made it to the coast yet, nor the one decent patch of woodland Portishead possesses. Is 50 possible? 60 before February? Watch this space.
